Cake Smash Photography in Viman Nagar, Pune

A one-year-old, a cake, and no instructions. Photographed at our studio in Wadgaon Sheri — next door to Viman Nagar, which you will appreciate on the way home.

The part nobody plans for

Somebody has to get a frosting-covered one-year-old home afterwards.

Every cake smash ends the same way: a delighted, sticky child, a change of clothes, and a car.

It is the least glamorous part of the session and the part families think about least when they book. A studio in the neighbouring locality means a manageable journey with a wrapped-up toddler. A studio across Pune means the whole afternoon is spent managing the aftermath.

The front of the session has the same shape. Cakes travel badly, outfits crease, and a child who has been in a car seat for an hour is rarely in the mood to be delighted by anything. Arriving quickly means arriving with all three intact.

None of that changes the photographs. It changes whether the day around them is a good memory or a logistical slog, and after a hundred first birthdays that difference is very visible in how the session goes.

It is worth saying that the mess itself is the point rather than a side effect. Families who try to keep it contained end up with photographs of a child being careful, which is not what anyone books this for. A short journey home is what makes it possible to stop worrying about that.

The other thing proximity buys is the option of doing this properly rather than combining it with the party. A separate session on a separate day gives the child a full hour of attention with no guests, no schedule and nothing else competing, and it produces a completely different set of photographs.

Getting ready

Packing for the journey home

The preparation nobody does is for afterwards. Bring a change of clothes, something to wrap your child in, a towel for the car seat, and more wipes than seems reasonable. Being nearby makes the aftermath manageable rather than miserable, but only if you have brought the things that make it manageable.

For the session itself, keep the outfit simple and bring a second one if you want clean portraits before the cake. Elaborate outfits photograph worse and clean up worse, and the photographs families print are almost always the simpler ones.

If you are ordering the cake specially, order it for the session rather than for the party. A cake that has already travelled to a party, been photographed, and come back is not the cake anyone wants in these frames.

Planning it

The three things we will ask

What time of day suits your child, first. A cake smash is a performance and a tired one-year-old does not perform. Being nearby means we can put the session at their best hour instead of at the hour that happens to be free.

Second, whether you want clean portraits beforehand. It changes the running order and the amount of time to allow, and it is the single most common thing families wish they had asked for once the icing is everywhere.

Third, who is coming to watch. Two parents is straightforward; two parents plus grandparents plus a sibling changes where everyone stands, and a child looking at five phones is not looking at the cake.

Do we bring the cake?

Tell us what you have in mind when you book and we will confirm exactly what to bring. Simple cakes with soft icing photograph better and smash better than elaborate ones, which is worth knowing before you order.

What should we bring for afterwards?

A change of clothes, wipes, and something to wrap them in for the journey. That is genuinely the whole list, and forgetting it is the most common thing families wish they had not.

What if our baby will not touch the cake?

Very common, and not a failed session. Some children demolish it in seconds, some inspect it suspiciously for ten minutes, and both make good photographs. We do not push a child who is not interested.

Can we do portraits before the cake comes out?

That is the usual order — clean portraits first, cake second, because there is no going back once it starts. If you want a second outfit, bring it and we will plan around it.

How far do families usually come for a cake smash?

Most come from Viman Nagar, Wadgaon Sheri, Chandan Nagar, Kharadi and Kalyani Nagar, with Vishrantwadi and Tingre Nagar close behind. Anywhere in Pune is fine - it is the journey home with a sticky one-year-old that makes the nearer areas easier.

How long does the whole thing take?

Less than most families expect. The cake part is genuinely short, and the rest is setup, clean portraits beforehand and clearing up afterwards. Allow more time than the photography needs and you will not feel rushed.

What if the cake is a disaster and we want to do it again?

It happens, and being close by makes a second attempt a real option rather than a theoretical one. Most families do not need it, but knowing it is possible takes the pressure off the first go.

Should the cake smash be before or after the birthday?

Before, usually — a week or two ahead, so the photographs exist in time for invitations or decor if you want them for that. It also means the party itself is not carrying two jobs at once.

Can we do this at home instead?

Ask us. Home has advantages, particularly for the clean-up, but the mess is real and it goes further than people imagine. Plenty of families prefer it to happen somewhere that is not their living room.

Can siblings be in the cake smash?

Yes, though it changes the dynamic entirely — an older sibling will usually take over. Tell us beforehand and we will photograph them together deliberately rather than as an interruption.

Do you provide the backdrop and setup?

Tell us what you have in mind when you book and we will confirm exactly what is provided and what to bring, so nothing is assumed on either side.

What happens to the cake afterwards?

Very little of it survives, which is the point. Bring the cake you are happy to lose and keep the good one for the party.

Turning one soon?

Send us the birthday and we will suggest a week. Most families shoot this shortly before the party rather than on the day.
